Consort Bio
The 21st Century Consort was founded in 1975 and in 1978 was invited to become the
resident ensemble for contemporary music at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
In its annual concert series at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Consort
presents programs frequently related to the museum's exhibitions, featuring music by living
composers- often world premieres-along with 20th and 21st century classics. Called a
"triumph for the 20th century music" by the Washington Post, the Consort has since been
hailed by critics-and a large and devoted following-for its innovative and superbly balanced
programs and its virtouso performances.
Under the direction of its founder and conductor Christopher Kendall, the Consort's artists
include members of the National Symphony Orchestra, along with other prominent chamber
musicians from the area and beyond. The 21st Century Consort has toured nationally, and
its concerts have been broadcast on National Public Radio. The award-winning ensemble
has recorded extensively for the Innova, Delos, Nonesuch, ASV, Centaur, Arabesque, CRI
and Smithsonian Collective labels.
